UsFarmGuys Farm Report: Fresh sand in the freestalls

Every couple weeks or so it’s time to put fresh sand in our freestall pens for the cows. This keeps them comfortable & healthy! There are many types of bedding for used for freestalls. At this point in time this is the option that fits our operation best.

I’ve been told that it’s rare to have triplets in cows. My experience backs that up because I don’t ever remember having any. But my neighbor recently did. I wasn’t quick enough to get them as new borns, but here they are just a couple weeks old.

This is my almost five year old son Ian. He comes with me whenever possible and is always eager to learn and do things on his own. This is the part of family farming that drives me. I hope that one day I can hand this legacy to my children and let them live out their dreams, just as I have been fortunate enough to do.

We have been selling some surplus straw this winter, but if the hill we have to climb to get out has thawed out at all it can get real interesting trying to get up it. Good thing we’ve got a few tough tractors to help the truck get out.

P.S. A name has been chosen for the calf. In the coming days she will get her tag in along with an update on how she’s doing.

Spent the other day talking with our agronomist about soil tests and our fertilizer program. It’s a bit more complex than just dropping a seed in the ground and hoping for the best. We have to plan and prepare months, sometimes years in advance.
